i suppose i should also mention that i’m reading poe a life cut short by peter ackroyd. it’s well written and compelling, yet, it’s  another source of bleakness and despair for me. is it possible that, if edgar allan poe had not lived a life of poverty, addiction,  and complicated relationships, his true genius as a writer and poet might not have been realized?

I think that the harshness of Poe’s life is what allowed him to be the creative genius that he was. Very often, that’s how it is for creative minds. They need the influx of pain and suffering in order to create. I know that I write more poetry when I’m suffering.

i think you have a very good point. we all come to earth with a certain lifepath. it seems to me that poe’s was that of ‘victim’, even though, he was able to create so much in a short lifespan. i remember the first time i read ‘the tell-tale heart’ in school, i was hooked. i still like to read that short story from time to time.
thank you for such a good comment.
